It's movies like Norbit that make me jump to the defense of Adam Sandler. Sandler gets a lot of flack for going for the cruder comedies (Little Nicky, Chuck n' larry ect. ect.) however at least he mixes it up with serious roles (Punch Drunk Love, Spanglish, Reign Over Me) whereas Eddie Murhy's skills seem to be "comedy" based only. Actually he did have a serious role in the same year as norbit, oh actually an oscar nominated role in Dreamgirls. Many say that the reason he didn't get this award is because of the piece of crap that was norbit made people think "whoa is that who we nominated!?"
It's been a while since i saw Norbit, and because of that (and the lack of positive stuff to say about it) i'm gonna keep this short. Firstly, fat is not funny. so the film fails straight away there. Then and this really really annoyed me, this film had a catchphrase. I'm sorry but when a comedy movie has to rely on a repeated line, thats terrible. oh and to top that, its a stolen line. Rasputia says (nearly every 10 seconds) "how you doin'" of course made popular by TV Show Friends...so..stealing a line and saying it again and again is funny?? Another thing that still baffles me to this day, why the hell did Thandie Newton agree to do this film??! It's a shame to see some one as great as her wasted on this crap.
As i say, i've got nothing positive to say, offensive stereotypes, Eddie Murphy trying to be funny, stolen catchphrases, its a trainwreck.
